If you need an MRI scan, one of your first questions is likely to be: how much will my MRI cost?
The out-of-pocket cost of an MRI can vary significantly between radiology providers across the Gold Coast. One of the main reasons is Medicare rebate eligibility. Not every MRI examination and not every MRI provider is eligible for a Medicare rebate, which can result in substantial differences in what patients pay for an MRI scan.
In this guide, we explain why MRI costs vary, how Medicare rebates and bulk billing affect your out-of-pocket cost, and what options may be available if the cost of your MRI is a concern.
Are MRI scans Medicare eligible?
Some MRI scans in Australia are eligible for a Medicare rebate, but not every MRI qualifies. Medicare eligibility depends on the type of MRI being performed and whether the examination meets the requirements of the relevant Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS) item. These requirements can include:
- Whether the clinic was granted a “Deed of Undertaking” (commonly referred to as “MRI Medicare rebate licence”
- the reason for the scan,
- the area of the body being examined,
- the patient’s age
- whether the MRI was requested by an allied health professional, GP or specialist.
This means that having a referral for MRI does not necessarily mean your scan will attract a Medicare rebate. For example, there are no MRI MBS item numbers for “abdominal pain”. In this case patient would have to pay the full cost out of pocket for their MRI scan.
Why can’t every radiology clinic offer MRI Medicare rebates?
Under the current system, not every MRI provider can offer Medicare rebates. MRI Medicare eligibility has historically been restricted through a government licensing system and Deed of Undertaking, with access granted through specific application or allocation rounds rather than an application process that is continuously open. As a result, most of the rebate licences are held with older corporate radiology providers. Newer private radiology providers are unable to offer Medicare rebates for MRI, despite operating advanced MRI technology. These restrictions are scheduled to be removed from 1 July 2027. If you would like to learn more about the complex relationship between MRI and Medicare under the current regulations, visit our insight article: “MRI Medicare Rebates Explained“.
Why do MRI costs vary between radiology providers?
When comparing MRI costs, it is important to distinguish between the patient’s out-of-pocket cost (or gap) and the total fee charged for the MRI examination.
The total fee is the full amount charged for the examination, before any Medicare rebate is applied. Where a Medicare rebate is available, it may cover part of this fee and the patient pays any remaining gap. Independent of how that total fee is divided between Medicare and the patient, the full cost of providing an MRI scan can vary between radiology providers for several reasons, including:
- the area of the body being examined
- the clinical reason for the MRI scan
- the type and complexity of the scan
- whether IV contrast is used
- the radiology provider’s billing policy (e.g. discounts for certain cohorts of patients)
- the scanner time required
- the MRI technology being used (e.g. Newer and more advanced technology is, by nature, more costly to run)
- Additional software or post-processing involved (e.g. NeuroQuant, SyMRI)
- the expertise involved in acquiring and interpreting the examination (e.g. MRI team and subspecialty radiologists)
Can you get a bulk billed MRI scan on the Gold Coast?
At the time of writing, there are no bulk-billing MRI radiology providers located in Gold Coast, Queensland for most private patients receiving imaging as an outpatient. However, some eligible radiology providers may offer discounts or bulk billing for concession card holders. This may change with the de-regulation of MRI Medicare rebates which will hopefully take in effect in mid-2027.
What is the cost of MRI scans in the Gold Coast, Queensland?
The out-of-pocket cost of an MRI in the Gold Coast, Queensland ultimately depends on rebate availability, the body part being scanned, scan time, IV contrast use, and complexity of the MRI scan.
For private MRI services in the Gold Coast, most radiology clinics MRI fees range between $360 to $540 out-of-pocket for routine imaging (e.g. Knee MRI scan, Lumbar Spine MRI scan).
We always recommend always getting a quote directly from your preferred provided before booking in.
Does a more expensive MRI mean a better MRI?
Not necessarily. Out-of-pocket cost alone is not a measure of comprehensiveness or quality of an MRI scan. Ultimately, radiology providers operate different business models. Larger corporate radiology may use high-volume models optimised for operational efficiency across their MRI departments. Other private practices may choose to allocate more scanner time with a more personalised imaging approach.
When comparing MRI providers, consider not only the out-of-pocket cost, but also the scanner technology, time allocated to the examination, imaging protocol, experience of the MRI radiographer and expertise of the specialist radiologist interpreting your scan.
For many patients, the important question is not just “How much does my MRI cost?” but also should be “What am I receiving for that cost?”
Some providers, such as MBR Health, offer advanced, exclusive imaging techniques that may further improve the value of our scans. For example, MRI spine for low back pain, includes MRI NerveVIEW (nerve imaging) and non-invasive MRI Discogram. Unlike traditional spinal MRI scans, MBR Health’s spinal MRI scans can assess the structural anatomy, while also visualising irritated/injured nerves and ruptured discs (annular fissures) in the same exam without the need for further imaging or diagnostic interventions (e.g. painful discography procedures).
What should I consider when choosing an MRI provider?
For some patients, choosing an MRI provider based on diagnostic confidence rather than price alone may provide better value over the course of their care.
An MRI scan that has the best chance of appropriately answer the clinical question may:
- reduce the need for repeat or additional imaging,
- help avoid delays in diagnosis, and
- give the treating practitioner clearer information to guide the next step.
This does not mean that a more expensive MRI is necessarily better, or that further testing will never be required. Rather, when imaging is being used to make important healthcare decisions, the value of an MRI extends beyond its initial out-of-pocket cost. The MBR Health approach to MRI
At MBR Health, specialist radiology and precision imaging are central to our approach to MRI.
Our experienced MRI radiographers are led by internationally recognised MRI Department Lead, Ben Kennedy, and work collaboratively with Dr Zane Sherif and our team of subspecialty radiologists. Together, the team combines next-generation imaging technology, specialist expertise and comprehensive, personalised imaging protocols tailored to each patient and the clinical question being investigated.
Rather than viewing MRI as simply time spent in a scanner, we consider the complete diagnostic process from understanding the clinical question and selection of the appropriate imaging protocol, to patient experience and specialist radiologist interpretation and reporting. This “imaging pipeline of diagnostic confidence” is continuously refined through feedback loops across all aspects of our radiology practice.

Will Medicare cover my MRI scan at MBR Health?
Unfortunately, not at this time. Although MBR Health is a comprehensive radiology clinic, and offers Medicare rebates across other specialist diagnostic imaging services, the current Medicare MRI regulations prevent our MRI scans from attracting a rebate. As such, the full cost of the scan is paid for by the patient. See “MRI Medicare Rebates Explained” for more detailed discussion on this topic. We are hopeful that the regulatory changes expected mid-2027 mean MBR Health can offer rebated MRI scans, making our next generation MRI scans accessible to more patients.
How can I find out exactly what my MRI will cost before I book?
Send MBR Health your referral or contact the team, and they can advise on the examination, expected fee and available payment options before the appointment. To upload your referral, Contact Us.
Does private health insurance cover the cost of an MRI?
Private health insurance generally does not cover the cost of an MRI performed as an outpatient at a radiology clinic. However, we have found some overseas private health cover does cover costs associated with out-patient MRI. Call our reception team for more information.
