CBCT is excellent for teeth and bone, but it is not a complete examination of the head and neck.
What CBCT is good at showing
- Teeth, roots and surrounding jaw bone.
- Impacted and supernumerary teeth.
- Dental implant sites and important bony landmarks.
- Selected root-canal anatomy and periapical bone change.
- Bony TMJ surfaces and degenerative change.
- Selected jaw lesions, fractures and postoperative anatomy.
- The bony walls of the sinuses and nasal cavity.
What CBCT is limited at showing
- Muscles, glands, lymph nodes and other soft tissues.
- The TMJ disc and ligaments.
- Nerves themselves, although their bony canals may be visible.
- Blood vessels and vascular disease.
- Brain and intracranial structures.
- Early marrow or soft-tissue infection.
- Most head-and-neck cancers and tumour extent.
- Functional airway obstruction or sleep apnoea.
When medical CT may be needed
Conventional medical CT may be more appropriate for major trauma, acute infection, soft-tissue swelling, broader sinus or neck assessment, cancer staging, vascular questions or when intravenous contrast is required. MBR Health’s Spectral CT can add iodine and material information in selected medical indications.
When MRI or ultrasound may be needed
3T MRI may be preferred for the brain, nerves, bone marrow, TMJ disc, muscles and many soft-tissue tumours. Ultrasound is useful for selected salivary glands, thyroid, superficial masses, lymph nodes and image-guided biopsy.
Why multi-modality assessment matters
Pathology is variable and often does not fit within a single imaging technique. CBCT may provide the dental and bony component of the answer, while clinical examination and another modality provide the soft-tissue, functional or biological information required for a confident diagnosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a normal CBCT mean there is no cause for my pain?
No. Pain can arise from soft tissues, nerves, muscles, referred pain or disease below the detection limits of CBCT.
Can CBCT be used as a cancer screening scan?
No. It may incidentally show some bony abnormalities, but it is not a validated general cancer-screening examination.
Who decides whether another test is needed?
The radiologist may recommend further imaging, and the referring dentist or medical practitioner decides the next step in the context of your symptoms and examination.
