What does the Medicare rule say?
The Medicare Benefits Schedule includes a general explanatory note for services that do not attract Medicare benefits. Under MBS Note GN.13.33, an MBS item does not apply when the service is provided at the same time as, or in connection with, an injection of a patient’s own blood or blood product. PRP falls within this autologous blood-product category. [8]
The restriction was introduced nationally in 2015 for autologous blood and blood-product injection services and remains reflected in the MBS rules current in August 2026.
Why is this important?
A PRP clinic should not create the impression that Medicare routinely rebates the PRP procedure, image guidance or an associated service when those services are provided in connection with the autologous blood injection. The exact billing pathway depends on what is provided and when, so patients should be given a clear written quote before treatment.
Does no Medicare rebate mean PRP does not work?
No. Medicare funding and clinical evidence are related policy questions, but they are not the same thing. MBS inclusion depends on legislation, policy, item design and health-technology assessment. Meanwhile, clinical evidence changes over time and differs by indication. Contemporary specialist guidance now supports PRP for selected patients with knee osteoarthritis, while evidence for other conditions remains variable. [6-8]
The more useful question is whether there is credible evidence for your specific diagnosis, whether the proposed PRP product is appropriately characterised, and whether the expected benefit justifies the cost and uncertainty.
What should you ask about cost before booking?
- What is the total out-of-pocket cost for the treatment?
- Does the price include imaging review, image guidance, PRP preparation and the injection?
- Is follow-up included or billed separately?
- If more than one treatment is recommended, what is the clinical reason for the series?
- What happens financially if the procedure is cancelled after assessment because PRP is not appropriate?

Can I claim PRP from Medicare if I have a referral?
