Regenerative Medicine Research
Investigator-initiated research into PRP, BMAC and biologic therapies.
Advancing Biological Therapies
Regenerative Medicine Research at MBR Health.
MBR Health conducts investigator-initiated regenerative medicine research led by Dr Zane Sherif, supported by our senior radiographers, sonographers and clinical research team. Our research investigates the application of biologic regenerative therapies, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), across a broad range of clinical conditions, with a focus on comprehensive diagnosis, precision delivery, protocol optimisation and objective measurement of clinical outcomes.
Our work is grounded in real patient case studies across multiple domains, forming the foundation for larger prospective research programs.
Our areas of focus
Our regenerative research programmes.
MBR Health’s regenerative medicine research is organised across seven clinical domains, each supported by case study documentation and ongoing protocol development.
The regenerative medicine research programs described on this page are investigator-initiated research activities conducted at MBR Health. These programs are exploratory in nature and do not represent standard or established clinical treatments. Biologic therapies including platelet-rich plasma and other regenerative applications investigated at MBR Health are not approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for the specific indications described, and are offered within a research framework only.
Participation is subject to appropriate clinical assessment, eligibility criteria and informed consent. MBR Health does not guarantee specific outcomes from any regenerative medicine research program. We encourage all patients to speak with their GP or specialist before enquiring about research participation.
- Orthopaedic Conditions
MBR Health has documented case study outcomes investigating PRP and/or BMAC for a range of orthopaedic conditions, such as knee osteoarthritis or tendinopathies, with image-guided delivery under ultrasound or spectral CT ensuring precise target selection and reproducible dosing.
- Non-surgical ACL Repair
Our case study work explores the potential of high-dose, high-frequency PRP as biologic adjuncts in non-surgical anterior cruciate ligament repair (ACL), investigating ligament healing response, return to function and objective imaging assessment of structural change following treatment.
- Low Back Pain
MBR Health has documented case study outcomes investigating image-guided PRP for chronic low back pain, with a focus on target selection, dosing protocols, safety profiling and measured clinical response across discogenic and facetogenic pain pathways.
- Neuropathy
Our case study work investigates image-guided PRP for peripheral neuropathy, exploring the potential of biologic therapy to support nerve regeneration and function. Neurography provides objective imaging assessment of nerve structure and response to treatment.
- Lung Conditions
MBR Health has conducted case study investigations into nebulised PRP for chronic lung conditions. This is a novel and emerging application of biologic therapy being approached with rigorous attention to safety profiling, dosing and clinical outcome documentation.
- Painful Bladder Syndrome
Our case study work investigates PRP for painful bladder syndrome, exploring the potential of biologic therapy to support tissue repair and symptom relief in a condition with limited conventional treatment options.
- PRP Protocol Optimisation
Across all clinical domains, MBR Health conducts dedicated research into PRP protocol optimisation, investigating preparation methods, concentration, activation, dosing and delivery techniques to maximise therapeutic consistency and clinical outcomes.
Spectral CT-guided HA Injection Our research infrastructure
Image-guided precision.
Regenerative medicine research at MBR Health is underpinned by our comprehensive diagnostic imaging infrastructure. Diagnosis and target selection are informed by advanced MRI neurography and non-invasive discography, providing the diagnostic precision required for accurate patient selection and treatment planning.
Biologic therapies are delivered under image guidance using ultrasound and spectral CT, ensuring precise target selection and reproducible dosing. MBR Health utilises a dedicated platelet counter to quantify platelet concentration in every PRP preparation, addressing one of the most significant limitations in the existing PRP literature and ensuring every treatment delivers a known and reproducible dose. Treatment response is monitored through serial diagnostic imaging, with quantitative MRI available where clinically indicated.
Serial MRI of Non-surgical mediated ACL Repair (Sherif et. al, 2025) Why It Matters
Clinical significance of regenerative medicine research.
Biologic therapies represent a fundamental shift in how degenerative, inflammatory and complex chronic conditions are approached, investigating the potential to restore tissue function and offer patients alternatives to surgical intervention or long-term pharmaceutical management. MBR Health’s regenerative medicine research is distinctive in three important ways:
- Diagnosis and target selection are informed by advanced MRI including neurography and non-invasive discography, ensuring patients are precisely assessed before treatment begins
- All biologic therapies are delivered under image guidance using ultrasound and spectral CT, ensuring a level of precision essential for both safety and reproducibility
- Platelet concentration is quantified in every PRP preparation using a dedicated platelet counter, addressing one of the most significant limitations in the existing PRP literature and ensuring every treatment delivers a known and reproducible dose
