Spectral CT represents an advanced evolution of CT imaging. While conventional CT primarily shows the anatomy and structure of the body, Spectral CT provides additional information about the composition of tissues and materials within it. This ability to differentiate materials can provide greater diagnostic clarity, reduce the need for additional imaging in appropriate cases, and offer particular advantages in cancer care, vascular disease and complex diagnostic assessment.

MBR Health operates the Philips IQon Spectral CT — the first detector-based Spectral CT system in Australian private practice — bringing advanced diagnostic capability to patients across the Gold Coast and Queensland.

Understanding Spectral CT

What is Spectral CT?

Traditional CT uses X-rays to produce detailed images of bones, organs and soft tissues. However, some tissues and materials can appear similar on conventional CT images. Spectral CT captures X-ray data across multiple energy levels, enabling differentiation between materials such as iodine, calcium, uric acid, silicone and soft tissue. This provides additional diagnostic information from a single scan and can assist with more precise tissue and material characterisation.

Importantly, the spectral data acquired at the time of the scan can be reprocessed to generate additional image reconstructions when clinically indicated. Where the original data has been retained, this may allow new clinical questions to be explored without requiring the patient to undergo another CT examination.

When Spectral CT may be recommended

CT is a fast and comprehensive imaging modality used across a broad range of clinical conditions, including:

  • Cancer staging and treatment response assessment
  • Vascular assessment and CT angiography
  • Chest, abdomen and pelvis imaging
  • Trauma and acute presentations
  • Urinary tract assessment, including kidney stones
  • Investigation of unexplained symptoms and suspected disease

At MBR Health, Spectral CT can be used for the same broad range of clinical indications as conventional CT, while providing additional spectral information from the same examination. Our Philips IQon Spectral CT captures conventional and spectral data simultaneously, allowing advanced reconstructions such as quantitative tissue characterisation, iodine mapping, virtual non-contrast imaging and material decomposition to be generated when clinically relevant — without requiring additional radiation or a separate scan.

Spectral CT can be particularly valuable when conventional imaging is inconclusive, when further tissue or lesion characterisation is required, or when optimising radiation and contrast exposure is clinically important.

What to Expect

The process to expect during your scan.

1 before

Before you arrive

If your scan includes intravenous contrast, you will be asked to fast for a minimum of two hours prior to your appointment. Some studies require a longer fasting period and our team will advise you of your specific requirements when booking. Specialised studies such as CT coronary angiography (CTCA) require additional preparation, which our team will explain when you book.

2 during

During your scan

On arrival you may be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire. If intravenous contrast is required, a small cannula will be placed by our clinical team. You will then lie on the scanner table while the scan is performed. Spectral CT scans are relatively quick, typically taking between 5 and 10 minutes. Some studies require brief breath holds during the scan and our radiographers will guide you through these clearly as they occur. If contrast is administered, you may feel a brief sensation of warmth or a metallic taste, which is normal and passes quickly.

3 after

After your scan

If no contrast was used, you may leave immediately after your scan. If contrast was administered, we will ask you to remain for approximately 15 minutes to ensure you feel well before leaving. We recommend drinking plenty of water after your scan to help flush the contrast from your system.

Our specialist radiologists will review your study and prepare a detailed report for your referring doctor. In most cases your results will be available within 48 to 72 hours and will be sent directly to your referring doctor. Your report and images will also be accessible through the MBR Health patient portal within the same timeframe. Please let our team know if you require your results sooner and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Does Medicare cover a Spectral CT scan?

In most cases the base CT scan performed on our spectral platform is covered by Medicare when referred by an eligible practitioner. Some advanced spectral applications such as additional reconstructions or quantitative analysis may incur an out-of-pocket fee. We will always confirm any costs before your appointment.

Are Spectral CT scans bulk billed?

Many diagnostic spectral CT scans are bulk billed through Medicare. If your doctor requests specialised applications such as advanced oncology staging or detailed quantitative reporting, there may be an out-of-pocket fee. Our bookings team will explain this clearly at the time of scheduling.

Do I need a referral for Spectral CT?

Yes. A referral from your GP or specialist is required for all spectral CT scans at MBR Health. This helps us tailor the protocol, contrast use and spectral reconstructions to your specific clinical needs.

Do I need to fast before my Spectral CT?

What makes Spectral CT different from standard CT?

Spectral CT does everything conventional CT can do — and more. By providing material differentiation, advanced reconstructions and additional spectral information from a single acquisition, it can enhance the detection and characterisation of disease, including cancer and vascular pathology. The result is more comprehensive diagnostic information, with the potential to optimise radiation exposure and contrast use.

Is a Spectral CT scan safe?

While all CT imaging involves ionising radiation, our Spectral CT technology and tailored protocols are designed to optimise dose while maintaining diagnostic quality. When contrast is required, our specialised protocols can also reduce the volume of contrast administered where clinically appropriate.

What is the difference between MRI and CT?

Spectral CT uses multiple energy levels to better differentiate materials and tissues, enhance contrast resolution and, where clinically appropriate, optimise the amount of iodine contrast required.

CT uses ionising radiation; however, our advanced Spectral CT technology and tailored protocols are designed to achieve high-quality diagnostic images while keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable.

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of soft tissues, organs, joints and the nervous system. Unlike CT, MRI does not use ionising radiation and is particularly valuable for detecting subtle changes and abnormalities that may not be visible with other imaging techniques.

What is the difference between iodine and gadolinium contrast?

Iodine contrast is used in CT scans and is injected to highlight blood vessels, organs and tissues. Patients with iodine allergies or certain kidney conditions may need special precautions. Gadolinium is used in MRI scans to improve visibility of tissues, blood flow or inflammation. It is generally well-tolerated and considered very safe when used appropriately.
