Non-compression Breast Spectral CT
Pioneering the Next Generation of Breast Imaging on Spectral CT
About Non-Compression Breast Scans | Gold Coast
Innovative Breast Imaging, Without Compression
Exclusive to MBR Health, our Non-Compression Breast Spectral CT is an advanced, low-dose breast imaging option performed without mammographic compression. Using prone positioning, contrast-enhanced 3D imaging and Spectral CT technology, it provides detailed assessment of breast tissue in a fast and comfortable examination.
We are the first radiology provider in Australia to utilise specialised prone positioning protocol on Spectral CT. Developed by our team for selected patients, it may be particularly useful for women who cannot tolerate breast compression, are unable to undergo MRI, have dense breasts or have breast implants.
Common Questions
What to Know Before Your
Breast CT Scan.
Find answers to common questions about our Spectral CT Breast scans, including what they can detect, why they may be recommended, how to prepare, CT contrast, scan times and what to expect from your visit.
What is a Non-compression CT Breast scan?
A non-compression Spectral CT breast scan is a low-dose, contrast-enhanced CT examination that provides detailed 3D images of the breasts without compression. The scan is performed lying face down, allowing the breast tissue to naturally spread for imaging.
Does a Spectral CT Breast scan hurt?
No. Our non-compression breast scan does not require the breast tissue to be compressed between plates. You lie face down during the scan, allowing the breasts to naturally spread for imaging. You may feel a brief warm sensation when the intravenous contrast is given.
How is it different from a mammogram?
Unlike a mammogram, a non-compression Spectral CT breast scan does not compress the breasts between plates. It produces detailed 3D images and uses intravenous contrast to assess how breast tissue enhances.
Does this non-compression breast CT scan replace routine screening mammography?
No. Mammography remains the established method for routine breast cancer screening for women 40 – 74+ years of age. Non-compression Spectral CT is an additional breast imaging option that may be appropriate in selected circumstances, including opportunistic breast imaging, implant integrity, suspected implant leak, or for some patients who are unable or unwilling to undergo mammography or breast MRI.
Why is IV contrast used?
Intravenous contrast helps highlight areas of increased blood flow and enhancement within breast tissue. Spectral CT can also measure how iodine is distributed and provide additional information about tissue composition, helping the radiologist better identify and characterise areas that may require closer assessment.
How long does a non-compression Breast Spectral CT scan take?
The scan itself is very quick, with images acquired within minutes. Allow approximately 30 – 45 minutes for the complete appointment, including preparation, positioning, administration of IV contrast and a short period of observation after your scan.
Do I need a referral for a non-compression Breast Spectral CT scan?
Yes. A referral from your GP or specialist is required so we can ensure the examination is appropriate for you and provide the results to your referring doctor.
How do I prepare for a Breast Spectral CT scan?
Please fast for 2 hours before your appointment. You can continue to drink water and take your usual medications unless advised otherwise. Because IV contrast is used, we will ask about your medical history, kidney function, allergies and any previous reactions to contrast. We will ask you to change into a gown prior to your scan.
Can I have this scan with Breast Implants?
Yes. Non-compression Spectral CT is particularly well suited to patients with breast implants because the breasts and implants are not compressed between plates. Our Spectral imaging can also help differentiate silicone from surrounding tissues, with dedicated colour-coded images making silicone easier to identify and assisting in the assessment of implant integrity and silicone leakage.
When will I receive my results?
Your scan will be reviewed by a specialist radiologist, with the report typically available within 2–3 days or sooner. Your report is sent to your referring doctor and released to your MBR Health patient portal at the same time.
How much does a non-compression Spectral CT breast scan cost?
A gap fee applies and may be approximately $420 with an eligible Medicare referral. Patients with a referral, but do not Medicare eligibility, are also welcome to have the scan as a private-paying patient. Please contact our team for current fees and Medicare eligibility information.
What is the difference between Breast MRI and Non-Compression Spectral CT?
Breast MRI is one of the most sensitive breast imaging techniques and is well established for high-risk breast screening and detailed breast assessment. However, where MRI is not suitable or cannot be tolerated, Non-Compression Spectral CT may provide an alternative option.
Our Non-compression Spectral CT may be particularly useful in patients with breast implants. Spectral CT can differentiate silicone from surrounding tissues using dedicated spectral imaging, which may assist in identifying implant rupture or silicone leakage. Published studies have shown promising performance for spectral CT compared to MRI in the assessment of silicone breast implant integrity.
MRI does not use ionising radiation, while Spectral CT uses a low-dose X-ray technique and provides additional spectral information about tissue composition and iodine distribution.
What is Opportunistic Breast Imaging?
Opportunistic breast imaging allows eligible patients having a CT scan of the chest for another medical reason (e.g. cough) to add MBR Health’s dedicated Non-Compression Breast Spectral CT protocol. This provides both assessment of the clinical indication, as well as, opportunistic breast assessment without requiring a separate imaging, or additional radiation.
It is not a replacement for routine mammographic screening, and suitability will depend on your individual circumstances and CT examination.
A MORE COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH
Not All CT Scans Are the Same.
As the first private radiology practice in Australia to introduce Spectral CT, MBR Health has continued to develop new ways to use this technology. Our team pioneered prone Non-Compression Breast Spectral CT in Australia, combining specialised positioning, low-dose 3D imaging, contrast and advanced spectral information in a dedicated breast protocol. For us, next-generation technology should enable next-generation imaging.
The MBR Health Difference
More Than Just a Breast Scan
Your Breast Scan experience matters just as much as the technology behind it.
At MBR Health, we focus on making your scan comfortable, comprehensive and straightforward.
Individual examinations, imaging protocols and reporting timeframes may vary depending on the clinical indication and patient circumstances. Additional imaging or investigations may still be recommended where clinically appropriate.
- No Breast Compression
Breast imaging is performed without mammographic compression. You lie comfortably in a prone position, allowing the breast tissue to naturally spread away from the chest wall during imaging.
- Low-Dose Spectral CT Breast Imaging
Our dedicated breast Spectral CT protocol has been specifically optimised to minimise radiation exposure while providing detailed three-dimensional imaging of the breast.
- Contrast-Enhanced Breast Assessment
Intravenous contrast allows assessment of breast tissue enhancement and vascularity, providing additional information beyond breast anatomy alone.
- Advanced Spectral Imaging
Spectral CT provides additional tissue information, including assessment of iodine distribution within enhancing breast tissue, alongside detailed three-dimensional anatomical imaging.
- Prone Positioning for Natural Tissue Spread
The examination is performed lying face down using dedicated positioning that allows the breasts to fall naturally away from the chest wall, helping spread breast tissue without compression.
- Rapid Breast Imaging
Image acquisition is rapid, providing a non-compression option for patients who may find mammography or longer MRI examinations difficult to tolerate.
- An Alternative When MRI Is Not Suitable
For selected patients who cannot undergo or tolerate breast MRI, contrast-enhanced Spectral CT may provide an alternative approach to advanced breast assessment. Suitability depends on the individual clinical indication.
- Timely Specialist Reporting
Your breast imaging is reviewed by a specialist radiologist, with reports typically sent to your referring doctor within 2–3 days (or sooner) and made available through the MBR Health patient portal app at the same time.
- No Patient Report Access Delays
Your breast imaging report is available in the MBR Health patient portal as soon as it is released, with no additional delay for patient access.
